Age Calculator
Free age calculator. Find your exact age in years, months and days, total days lived, and a live countdown to your next birthday.
Enter valid dates in the correct order.
Working out an age in whole years is easy. Working out an exact age — years, months and days — is not, because months have different lengths and leap years shift the arithmetic. This calculator does it precisely from any birth date to any reference date.
It also shows total days lived, total weeks and hours, and a countdown to the next birthday. Useful for forms, visa and pension applications, school enrolment cut-offs, and simple curiosity.
How to use the Age Calculator
Enter the date of birth
Type or pick the birth date. Any year is supported, past or future.
Set the "age at" date if needed
It defaults to today. Change it to find an age on a specific past or future date — useful for eligibility cut-offs.
Read the exact age
The result is broken into years, months and days rather than a rounded decimal.
Check the extra figures
Total days, weeks and hours lived, plus the days remaining until the next birthday.
How exact age is calculated
The correct method subtracts calendar components in order — years, then months, then days — borrowing where necessary, exactly as you would in long subtraction.
From 14 March 1990 to 25 July 2026: the years give 36, the months give 4, and the days give 11 — so 36 years, 4 months, 11 days. Dividing total days by 365.25 would give 36.36 years, which is correct as a decimal but useless on a form.
Leap years and the 29 February problem
A leap year occurs every year divisible by four, except century years not divisible by 400. So 2000 was a leap year; 1900 was not; 2100 will not be.
People born on 29 February — "leaplings" — have a legal birthday that varies by jurisdiction. Most US states and the UK treat 1 March as the date on which a year of age is attained in non-leap years; some jurisdictions use 28 February. This calculator counts the elapsed calendar interval, which is the neutral answer.
Age reckoning around the world
- Western reckoning — you are zero at birth and gain a year on each birthday. Used almost everywhere for legal purposes.
- East Asian age — historically you are one at birth and gain a year at new year, making you one or two years "older". South Korea formally moved to international reckoning in June 2023.
- Gestational age — pregnancy is counted in weeks from the last menstrual period, not from conception, which is why a "40-week" pregnancy is about 38 weeks of actual development.
Where an exact age matters
- School enrolment — most US districts use a cut-off date such as 1 September; a child’s exact age on that date decides the year group.
- Retirement benefits — US full retirement age is 67 for anyone born in 1960 or later, and benefits are reduced for each month claimed early.
- Insurance pricing — many insurers price on age at the next birthday, so a policy bought a day before a birthday can be measurably cheaper.
- Visa and immigration forms — a child ageing out of a dependent category mid-application can change eligibility entirely.
Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate my exact age?
Subtract the birth date from today by component — years first, then months, then days, borrowing where the day or month is smaller. Enter the two dates above and the calculator handles the borrowing for you.
Does it account for leap years?
Yes. It uses real calendar arithmetic rather than an average year length, so every leap day between the two dates is counted correctly.
Can I calculate age on a future date?
Yes — change the "age at" date to any future date. This is how you check whether someone will meet an age threshold by a deadline.
What if I was born on 29 February?
The calculator counts the actual elapsed interval. Which legal date counts as the birthday in a non-leap year depends on jurisdiction — most commonly 1 March in the US and UK.
How many days are in a year?
365 in a common year and 366 in a leap year, averaging 365.2425 days over the Gregorian cycle. This is why day-count answers based on averages drift from real calendar arithmetic.
Can I use it for pets?
You can find the exact chronological age. Converting to "dog years" is not a simple multiple — a dog reaches roughly human 15 in its first year, and large breeds age faster than small ones.
Is my date of birth stored?
