Exchange rates are indicative and for information only. They may differ from the rate your bank or card provider applies. Live rates come from the European Central Bank via Frankfurter.

This converter uses live mid-market exchange rates for more than thirty currencies, refreshed daily from public central bank data. The mid-market rate is the true midpoint between what buyers and sellers are quoting — the rate you see on Google or Reuters, and the benchmark every provider is measured against.

It is important to know that you will almost never receive this rate. Banks, airport kiosks and card networks all add a margin. What the mid-market rate gives you is the yardstick for judging how large that margin is.

How to use the Currency Converter

  1. Enter an amount

Type any figure in the source currency. Conversion happens as you type.

  2. Choose the currencies

Pick the currency you have and the one you want. Use the swap button to reverse the direction instantly.

  3. Read the converted amount

The result uses the current mid-market rate, with the rate itself and its timestamp shown beneath.

  4. Compare against a real quote

Before exchanging money, compare your bank or provider’s quoted rate with this one — the difference is the fee you are actually paying.

Why your bank’s rate is worse than this one

Currency providers rarely charge an obvious fee. Instead they quote a rate a little worse than mid-market and keep the difference — a practice called the spread. A provider advertising "zero commission" may still be taking 3%–5% this way.

Where you exchangeTypical margin over mid-market
Airport exchange counter7%–15%
High-street bank2%–5%
Credit card foreign transaction1%–3% plus card fee
Specialist transfer services0.3%–1%
Multi-currency accounts0%–0.5%

On a $2,000 exchange, the gap between an airport counter and a specialist service is easily $150.

Dynamic currency conversion — always decline

When a foreign card terminal or website offers to charge you "in your home currency", that is dynamic currency conversion. It sounds helpful and is almost always expensive: the merchant’s processor sets the rate, typically 3%–7% worse than mid-market, and keeps the margin.

Always choose to be charged in the local currency. Your card network — Visa or Mastercard — will then convert at close to the interbank rate, and you only pay your own bank’s foreign transaction fee, if it has one.

What moves exchange rates

  • Interest rates. Higher rates attract foreign capital and strengthen a currency; rate-cut expectations weaken it.
  • Inflation. Persistently high inflation erodes purchasing power and, over time, the currency’s value.
  • Trade balance. Countries exporting more than they import see more demand for their currency.
  • Political and fiscal stability. Uncertainty pushes money toward the dollar, franc and yen — the traditional safe havens.
  • Commodity prices. The Canadian and Norwegian currencies track oil; the Australian dollar tracks metals.

Practical tips for travellers

  • Withdraw local cash from a bank ATM at your destination rather than buying currency before you fly. Decline the ATM’s own conversion offer.
  • Use a card with no foreign transaction fee. Several US cards charge nothing, saving 3% on every purchase abroad.
  • Avoid airport and hotel exchange desks — they charge the highest margins because they sell convenience.
  • Never exchange large sums at once if the rate is volatile; splitting the amount averages out the timing.
  • Carry a small amount of local cash for taxis, markets and tipping, but do not over-buy.

About the rates used here

Rates come from free public exchange rate APIs, which draw on central bank reference data, and update roughly once a day. If your device is offline or the source is unreachable, a bundled fallback set of rates is used instead and the interface will say so.

These are indicative mid-market rates for information. They are not a dealing quote, and they will not match a live trading platform tick for tick. For contracts and accounting, use the rate your provider actually applies.

Frequently asked questions

What is the mid-market rate?

The midpoint between the buy and sell prices of two currencies on the global market — the rate you see on Google or Reuters. No consumer provider gives you exactly this rate, but it is the benchmark for judging their margin.

Why does my bank give a different rate?

Banks add a margin, usually 2%–5%, on top of the mid-market rate. That margin is their profit and often replaces an explicit fee, which is why "commission-free" exchange is rarely free.

How often are these rates updated?

Roughly once a day from public central bank data. For everyday conversion this is more than accurate enough; for active trading you need a live market feed.

What is the cheapest way to send money abroad?

Specialist transfer services generally beat banks substantially, charging 0.3%–1% versus 2%–5%. Compare the total received amount, not the advertised fee, since the margin is hidden in the rate.

Should I let a shop charge me in my home currency?

No. That is dynamic currency conversion and typically costs 3%–7%. Always choose the local currency and let your card network convert.

Is it better to exchange money before travelling?

Usually not. Withdrawing local currency from a bank ATM at your destination with a low-fee card almost always beats buying cash in advance, and always beats an airport counter.

Does the converter work offline?

Yes. The site is a progressive web app with a bundled fallback rate table, so conversion still works without a connection — the rates will simply be older, and the interface will tell you.

Which currencies are supported?

More than thirty of the most traded currencies, including USD, EUR, GBP, JPY, INR, CAD, AUD, CHF, CNY, SGD, AED and the Nordic currencies.
