JPG, PNG or WebP · converted privately on your device

Format conversion solves two everyday problems: an application refuses the format you have, or the format you have is far larger than it needs to be. Converting a PNG photograph to WebP routinely cuts the file to a fifth of its size with no visible change.

This tool converts between PNG, JPG and WebP in your browser, with a quality control for the lossy formats. Nothing is uploaded.

How to use the Image Converter

  1. Add your image

Drag in a PNG, JPG or WebP file, or click to browse.

  2. Choose the output format

PNG for transparency and sharp text, JPG for photographs and maximum compatibility, WebP for the smallest web files.

  3. Set the quality

Applies to JPG and WebP. 80% is a sensible default for photographs.

  4. Convert and download

The converted file downloads directly to your device.

Choosing a format

FormatCompressionTransparencyBest for
JPGLossyNoPhotographs; universal compatibility
PNGLosslessYesLogos, screenshots, text, anything needing transparency
WebPBothYesThe web — smallest files at equivalent quality
AVIFBothYesSmaller still, but slower to encode and less widely produced

A rough rule: photograph → JPG or WebP; anything with text, sharp edges or transparency → PNG or WebP.

Why WebP is worth switching to

WebP produces files roughly 25%–35% smaller than JPG at the same visual quality, and often 50% or more smaller than PNG for images with flat colour. It supports both lossy and lossless compression, transparency and animation in a single format.

Browser support is universal across Chrome, Firefox, Safari, Edge and mobile browsers. The remaining caveat is software rather than browsers: some older desktop applications and printing services still do not accept it, so keep a JPG or PNG copy for anything you may need to submit elsewhere.

What conversion cannot undo

Converting a JPG to PNG does not restore the detail JPG discarded. The compression artefacts become permanent, losslessly preserved pixels — you get a much larger file containing exactly the same visible flaws.

Quality only ever goes one way. Keep your originals, convert copies, and convert from the highest-quality source you have rather than from an already-compressed intermediate.

Transparency and the white background trap

JPG has no alpha channel. Converting a transparent PNG to JPG fills the transparent areas with a solid colour — usually white or black — and this cannot be reversed.

If your image is a logo, an icon, or anything meant to sit on a coloured background, convert to PNG or WebP instead. Only flatten to JPG when you are certain the background will always be the colour you flattened to.

A privacy benefit of converting

Photographs carry EXIF metadata: GPS coordinates, camera model, and the exact date and time the picture was taken. Posting an unmodified phone photo can publish your home address without you realising.

Re-encoding through the browser canvas discards all of it. Any conversion here produces a clean file containing only the image itself.

Frequently asked questions

Which format is best for the web?

WebP — typically 25%–35% smaller than JPG at the same quality, with transparency support and universal browser support. Keep a JPG fallback only if older non-browser software needs to open the file.

Does converting improve quality?

No. Conversion can only preserve or reduce quality, never restore it. Converting a compressed JPG to PNG produces a larger file with the same artefacts.

Are my images uploaded?

No. Conversion runs in your browser and your files never leave your device.

What happens to transparency when I convert to JPG?

It is filled with a solid colour, permanently. Convert to PNG or WebP instead if transparency matters.

Why is my PNG so large?

PNG is lossless and stores every pixel exactly, which suits text and flat colour but is very inefficient for photographs. Convert photographs to JPG or WebP for a dramatic reduction.

Is WebP supported everywhere?

In every current browser, yes. Some older desktop applications and print services still do not accept it, so keep a JPG copy for those.

Does converting remove EXIF data?

Yes. GPS location, camera details and timestamps are all discarded — worth knowing before posting photos publicly.

Can I convert HEIC files from my iPhone?

Not directly, since browsers cannot decode HEIC. Set your iPhone camera to "Most Compatible" under Settings → Camera → Formats to capture JPG, or export as JPG before converting.
