JPG, PNG or WebP · drag on the image to select the crop area
Cropping is the most powerful edit available, because it decides what the picture is about. Removing everything that does not serve the subject usually improves a photograph more than any adjustment to colour or contrast.
Drag to select any area, or use a preset ratio for a platform that requires one. Everything is processed in your browser and nothing is uploaded.

Composition guidelines that actually help
- Rule of thirds. Place the subject on a third line rather than dead centre — it usually produces a more comfortable image.
- Leave space in the direction of movement or gaze. A person looking right should have room on the right; crowding the edge feels wrong.
- Do not crop at joints. Cutting a person at the wrist, ankle, elbow or knee looks like an accident. Crop mid-limb instead.
- Straighten the horizon before cropping. A tilted horizon is the fastest way to make a good photo look amateur.
- Crop tighter than feels comfortable. Most photographs are improved by removing more than you first want to.
- Centre only deliberately — symmetrical subjects and formal portraits are the cases where it works.
Cropping loses resolution — plan for it
Cropping discards pixels. Taking a quarter of the frame from a 4000 × 3000 image leaves 2000 × 1500 — still plenty for the web, but noticeably less for print.
Check the output dimensions before you commit. If the crop takes you below the size you need, you cannot recover it by enlarging afterwards; resizing upward only interpolates. Shoot or scan wider than you need when you know a crop is coming.
Profile pictures specifically
Most platforms display profile pictures as circles, but crop and store them as squares. Anything in the corners of your square will be cut off, so keep the subject well inside a central circle.
Faces should occupy roughly 60% of the frame height. Profile images are viewed at 40 pixels or less in most feeds, so a full-body shot becomes an unrecognisable smudge — crop tightly to head and shoulders.
Frequently asked questions
How do I crop to an exact ratio?
Select a preset ratio before dragging — the selection is then constrained to that shape, so 1:1 stays square however you drag it.
Are my images uploaded?
No. Cropping happens in your browser and your files never leave your device.
Does cropping reduce quality?
It reduces dimensions, not quality — the pixels kept are unchanged. Just make sure the remaining size is still large enough for your purpose.
What is the difference between cropping and resizing?
Cropping removes part of the image to change the composition or ratio. Resizing scales the whole image to different dimensions. They are often used together.
What ratio should a profile picture be?
1:1 square. Most platforms display it as a circle, so keep the subject centred and away from the corners.
Can I crop to specific pixel dimensions?
Draw the selection first, then resize the result to the exact pixels you need — cropping to the right ratio first means the resize will not distort anything.
Can I undo a crop?
Not within the tool, but your original file is untouched — the crop produces a new download. Keep originals and work on copies.
Does it work on mobile?
Yes. The selection supports touch, so you can drag the crop area directly on a phone or tablet.
