PDF with selectable text · up to 300 pages · no uploads

Transfers stay in this browser tab and are cleared when opened in the next tool.

Text only: tables and multi-column layouts may need cleanup. Image-only scans need OCR software.

PDF Text Extractor reads the selectable text stored in a PDF and puts it in an editable workflow: copy the output or download a plain text file. It is useful for gathering notes, reusing your own document content and searching a small document outside a PDF reader.

Your PDF stays on your device. The browser reads its text layer page by page and adds page markers to the output. No account is needed, and the tool does not send the file to an extraction service.

How to use the PDF Text Extractor

  1. Choose a PDF

Open a document containing selectable text, or try the sample PDF. Documents with up to 300 pages are supported. Split longer files first to keep memory use manageable.

  2. Let the pages finish

A progress message shows which page is being read. Keep the tab open while extraction runs. Large files and older phones may take longer, even when the page count is modest.

  3. Check the reading order

Review headings, tables and multi-column sections. A PDF stores drawing instructions and text fragments, which may not be in the same order as a person reads the page.

  4. Copy or save

Copy the extracted text or download the UTF-8 text file. Page markers help you locate a passage in the original. Keep the original PDF if you need to verify formatting or figures.

Selectable text versus scanned pages

A document exported from a word processor often contains actual text objects. A photograph or scanned page is usually just an image, even though you can see letters. This tool reads text objects; it does not recognize characters inside an image.

Try selecting a sentence in your usual PDF reader. If individual words can be selected, the document probably has a text layer. Some scanned documents already include an OCR layer produced elsewhere; that layer can be extracted here, including any recognition mistakes it contains. If no text is found, the tool explains that OCR may be required.

Why extracted text can look different

PDF is a page description format rather than a structured word-processing document. A heading might be stored as several fragments, and two columns might be interleaved in the internal sequence. Text extraction cannot reliably infer all of the original author’s reading structure from those fragments.

The tool preserves line-break hints supplied by the PDF engine and separates fragments with spaces. Page markers distinguish one page from the next. It does not recreate tables, preserve fonts, export images, infer a hierarchy of headings or rebuild the document as a Word file. Check the result before using it as a transcript or sending it onward.

Useful next steps

Avoid automatically removing duplicate lines from documents where repetition matters. Repeated labels, totals and footnotes may each belong to a separate section. Formatting cleanup should make text easier to read without silently changing its meaning or structure.

  • Paste the result into Text Cleaner to remove extra spacing or repeated blank lines.
  • Use Word Counter to estimate the length of the extracted material.
  • Use Text Diff Checker to compare short passages from two versions.
  • Keep the source PDF alongside the text when exact figures or wording matter.

Limits and supported documents

The 300-page limit keeps the workflow suitable for a browser tool, but page count is not the only factor affecting memory. A short PDF can contain huge images or complex fonts. If the page becomes slow, split the document into smaller parts and extract each part separately.

Password-protected and damaged PDFs are not supported in this workflow. Remove a password using an authorized local application before trying again. The tool does not attempt to bypass document protection. A failed extraction does not modify the original file, and selecting another file starts a fresh extraction.

Privacy and downloaded text

The input file is processed locally, but the extracted text can contain the same private information as the original PDF. Store and share your downloaded text with the same care you would use for the document. The absence of an upload step does not change the sensitivity of the content.

Results are held in the current page and are not saved as an account history. Refreshing or closing the page removes that result from the interface. The downloaded text file is a separate copy on your device and remains there until you manage it through your usual file tools.

Frequently asked questions

Can it extract text from a photo of a receipt?

Only if the PDF already contains a selectable text layer. Image-only receipts require OCR, which is not included here.

Can it export a Word document?

No. It exports plain text. Use the original document or dedicated layout-conversion software when you need tables, images and editable page formatting.

Why are some characters missing?

Unusual embedded fonts, missing character mappings and a poor OCR layer can affect extraction. Compare with the original and correct the output before relying on it.
